ORN-PHT. Handcrafted Recycled 1874 Encyclopaedia Britannica Keepsake Box
A handcrafted recycled 1874 Encyclopaedia Britannica keepsake box.
Volume XVIII. ORN-PHT. Ninth Edition
An antique British encyclopaedia with beautiful gilt lettering, destined for landfill, has been recycled and turned into this wonderful keepsake box. The "box" is made of wood (leftover unused wooden floor) and the interior lining comes from 1880s advertisement from The Graphic, a British publication. The left part of the interior has been covered with William Morris MT washi. The book bottom (when you lay the book flat) on the exterior is edged with Japanese silk ribbon. There is no lock.
The rough edges of the book as well as parts at the top of the spine have not been restored since the aim was to retain the lovely worn look of the book. Though a part near the headband (top of the spine) near the hinge is worn and a bit broken (see very last photo), the lid/cover will not come off the hinge as it has been reinforced within. Treat this treasure as you would a precious book and it should last.
Use as keepsake box, stationery box, or display case (it stands on its own).Size: 9.5 inches x 11 inches x 2.5 inches (24 cm x 28 cm x 6.5 cm)
Materials: paper, wood, adhesive, silk ribbon
